Directors Statement
Stolen Springs is not just a film; it’s a deeply personal journey and an urgent call to action. Growing up in New York City, I was surrounded by the everyday convenience of bottled water. I never questioned the impact of this ubiquitous product until one day in my high school economics class. There, I learned about the free rider problem—how companies exploit public resources for profit, while leaving society to deal with the consequences. This revelation became the catalyst for a film that would take me far from New York City’s bustling streets to the serene, yet embattled, local towns of Maine.
My vision for Stolen Springs was to bring the hidden stories of bottled water to the surface, by personally examining both the economics and environmental impact of this $300 billion industry by traveling to its source. I wanted to juxtapose the serene beauty of Maine’s landscapes with the harsh realities of corporate exploitation and environmental degradation. By weaving together intimate interviews, historical research, and my own investigative journey, I aimed to paint a holistic picture of how something as simple as a bottle of water can carry such profound implications.
Approaching this film as a young, first-time director presented its own set of challenges and opportunities. I embraced a raw style, capturing moments as they unfolded—whether it was my solo road trip through Maine, the excitement of meeting state representatives, or the candid conversations with locals who shared their concerns and experiences. This hands-on, immersive approach allowed me to learn alongside the audience. Since it was just me, I couldn’t easily shoot myself so I tried to shoot it as a point-of-view piece where you walk in my shoes.
